AVG Free 8.0 and false positives

Ever since downloading and using AVG free 8.0 I've been getting a lot of false positives.

One of them, Trojan horse proxy.ACCX is being reported inside of avgui.exe which is AVG's gui executable and it's being reported in Republic the Revolution. It also has reported other viruses and trojans inside of Hewlett Packard software and drivers that are for my new color laser printer.

What gives? If this thing reports 'too good' then what use is it? Anyone else experience this with the recent update?

I've also noticed very poor performance when opening web pages and during bootup of the computer. I've leaned my computer down to only the essential services and processes and it still bogs down since AVG 8.0. AVG 8.0 is now almost twice as slow as Norton and is quickly becoming annoying on my system. It's not my drives either because they are completely defragged and Diskkeeper 2008 is showing nearly all blue's on my drive maps. I have less than 1 fragment per file and the file tables are completely unfragmented.

AVG 8.0 does not seem to affect games but it affects everything else.

With my recent problems I'm ready to switch to Avast.

    Also on another note:

If you are using ZoneAlarm with MSVS 2005 and coding in C# you will have troubles. ZoneAlarm somehow prevents new changes to code from being compiled with F5. So you have to manually build your changes and then build the solution. Annoying.

AVG has been beginning to grate on my nerves too recently. I might try Kapersky a I have heard good things about it.

Well, that's why I ditched AVG for Avast. Not to mention the GUI & design is terrible.

You could class it's behaviour as stupid, rather than 'too good' as it's a 'anti-virus' program not a 'anti-methods that may be used by a virus' program

Bubba get rid of AVG ( It's a resource hog in my view too ) and get !Avast. Its more light-weight in size and its easier to use and handle. Furthermore, it updates itself rather than relying on you to do it which is a good thing.

I had AVG 7.5 but that expired, when I had 8.0 my love affair with AVG products went down the drain.

I removed AVG 8 and installed Avast! on my parents computer, and it's much nicer, especially for an older machine like theirs (less RAM and such). For my own I've just decided to run a scan every so often using Kaspersky's online scanner. Seems to work well.

Seems like a real common decision. I also Used AVG until version 8 came out. I also switched to Avast and have been enjoying it ever since.

However, I'm still looking for something with a very simple UI, that I can install on the systems of the computer illiterate. Avast has some peculiarities that some can't seem to grasp.

I didn't like avast, and avg 8 is not as bothersom than the previous version. But Avast is nice, just a lot of useless stuff and too difficult to configure quickly.

I too use Avast. I have about 10 PC's, I use Avast when I can, I have avg on just one but it doesn't have a lot of ram so I used Avg now I might try Nod32. I’ve heard great things about it as far as being good at not using system recourses. however Avast uses more ram a LOT more ram that Avg just parts of Avast have used up to 40 mbs not including the rest of it, that might total to around over 100mbs of used ram that gets cleared up after I shut down Avast either way my main rig has plenty of ram to expend for Avast. Avast will also find more stuff that Avg or has, it will alert you if a web page has malicious content and abort the connection. As far as false positives for say a no cd patch or something similar it might or might not false positive. On the note of false positives there viruses that make OS system files False positive I leanred the hard way when I had to reinstall windows xp. AAs for the best Av I’ve heard panda is good I have it on one PC the registration process is a night mare but when it works it works well and is light on recourse.

My post clearly stated that it found a virus in its own gui executable as well as Hewlett Packard printer drivers. Doesn't sound like something suspicious to me. Sounds like AVG is too picky.

I assure you I do not have any viruses. These are false positives caused by the new AVG 8.0. I've had my install of XP up now since my Vista experience and have had no issues till now. When AVG 7.5 found something way back when I took note because it rarely found any problems. But this time around Spybot and other detection programs report nothing and yet AVG's new spyware detector/virus scanner is finding stuff everywhere. Either AVG is really really really good or it has a ton of false positives.
