    Scanner missing?

Hi, I'm having a puzzled moment right now. A friends scanner is trying to be smart and appears to be disappearing (no pun intended) whenever you want to use it. It's just randomly disappearing and reappearing in the device manager. It's an ME system and I've checked that all the drivers are there... they are. I can't work it out. It works perfectly well when the system can recognise that it's there. The cable isn't fractured and is secure. Does anyone have any ideas? Cheers guys!!

A bit of progress... the system recognises the hardware when the windows recoverydisk is in the CD-ROM drive. However this is a recent occurence and all the drivers are present on the hardrive and the necessary software. I'm at a bit of a loss. It's a bit inconvenient having to put the recovery disk in every time you want to scan something.

Try deleting the old drivers and reinstalling either them or new
    updated drivers.
