Ya, its not the people who don't smoke but the people who hate smokers.
Hince* Rob Reiner...
By the way, you should check out the "Butt Out" South Park episode.
Gotta love Trey Parker.
Not true. While car exhaust fumes may probably kill me if concentrated enough, I can walk any street without problems, I can visit airports just fine, I can even drive through industrial areas without noticing. I can not visit a pub or bar where smoking is allowed. Staying there for just an hour having a glass of water will be enough for a very bad hangover the next day. If I stay for 2 hours with friends and drink a beer, I'm gone for good. I cannot visit a pub on another day than saturday, because I need a day off to regenerate. And if I have the same symptoms wether I visit a room of smokers or getting drunk, I'd rather get drunk. Or better yet, nothing of the two. Bye bye smokers, I don't regret not having been in a pub for 2 years and I don't regret not meeting smokers anymore. I don't ........ in your drinks, so don't smoke in the air I breathe please.Quote:
Bah. There's more dangerous toxins being belched from the exhausts of planes, trains and automobiles (not to mention countless industrial plant sources and their emissions) that dwarf anything the burning of a cigarette can do to non-smokers.
Hmm... but doesn't Germany already prohibit smoking in closed public spaces?
Indeed it does, but it's a new law. A good one. I've been in a few restaurants and it's been a great change. It also shows that people don't smoke because they like it, but because they are addicted. Nobody can tell me they like standing out there in the cold rain hastily inhaling while all their friends are inside where it's warm having a beer. That's an addiction, nothing less.
But the pub owners have sued the state to take that law back, because their profits supposedly break in. If it was for them, we'd have public smoking back, because every single pub will go bancrupt if we don't. Funny how other countries like France have that figured out. If pubs would go bancrupt because of that law, France would not have a single pub today.
On the other hand, that law is discriminating against a perfectly legal habit. I'm partially on the side of smokers here. The small pubs in Germany have their regulars, who come there to drink, smoke and play Skat. That's what they are there for. If you don't want to inhale smoke in a pub, go to another one. I've never understood, why they didn't just initiate a law whereby pubs are required to have a non-smoking and smoking section, which are partitioned off from each other.

Technically, I don't believe France has a single pub - aside from perhaps the odd ex-pat Irish/English fake pub. The word Pub means Public House, and is a legal term in English/Scottish/Welsh (and I think Irish) law. In other countries, the term doesn't mean the same thing. In France, alcohol is served in cafes, bars and restaurants. Here in the UK, they also have a smoking ban in public buildings, including Public Houses and restaurants.

It's probably a mater of compromise. What was witnessed over here was that after the law was introduced, no one lost customers. After a couple of weeks folks just got used to it.
Personally, despite being a veteran smoker, I strongly dislike the smoke and smell. So I sympathize. I always avoided crowded enclosed areas populated with smoke.
My worst ever experience in my life was always the Bangkok International Airport (laserlight may know what I'm taking about, or any of you who passed by). I used to do that airport often when going from Adelaide to Lisbon. The smoking areas are tiny places where maybe 20 people at most can fit, right in the main corridors and glass walled into a small room with an ashtray in the middle and a few chairs.
Because this is a busy airport those rooms are always full. I'm not joking when I say this: You can hardly look inside! It's that filled with smoke. It's one of the most horrid places on earth, those little smokers rooms. And all the time I was getting inside of one (you don't care anymore when you just did a 14h non smoking flight)
With only one exception... A few years back (I reckon up until 5 years ago) Heathrow (London) had this smoker room on one of its international departure lobbies that, while more spacious, was... guess... carpeted! The smell of nicotine and tar emanating from that carpet was completely obnoxious. You could even smell it from outside and with the glass door closed. People used to speed up the pace while passing by and look inside at the unfortunate souls caught in it with the kind of look in your eyes that screams disgusting. Gosh! How embarrassing. I'm happy that smokers are now more respected in Heathrow. But I wonder how's Bangkok.
I hate smokers not because they smoke, but because they don't value life. Its not just you who suffer, you put your near and dear ones through an ordeal they don't deserve, and at the end of it all, it just sucks to see people die that horrible death.
Smoking causes heart attacks too tho.
Fair enough. You hate me, you hate Albert Einstein because he smoked too, you hate soldiers that value their country more than they value their lives, you hate storm chasers, you hate coal miners because most will die of cancer in their late middle age, you hate daredevils,...
... and you hate yourself everytime you cross without looking, everytime you don't jog in the mornings, everytime you go to KFC, get drunk, do paragliding, or drive over the speed limit.
I guess I should hate you too.
Whats the point in hating each other?
This is getting stupid :P
