vB was just starting then. It was a novelty and quiet an attractive one. With them not sure where it would lead business-wise, it doesn't surprise me that at that time they would issue lifetime licenses.

They still offer lifetime licenses, it just doesn't come up free updates. Just to be clear I'm going off what people who have used it have told me and not personal experience.

The one that kermi3 was referring to is SMF. I find it to be not quite as polished as vBulletin, but there is one feature that is so much better that it makes SMF easily the best forum software I have used (as a user). That features is the ability to remember what has been read and what hasn't. Take too long of a bathroom break on vBulletin and all your threads are marked as read.
I'm confused. What are you folks talking about?
Threads stay marked read in here with only a few exceptions which I always attribute to bugs in the code. vB doesn't have cookie based read history.

Threads get marked as read when they haven't been read. It happens on every vBulletin board I've used.
If you don't do anything on the forum for a certain time period (15-20 minutes I think) then all threads are marked as read. This is not a good thing, since there are some times when I want to read a couple threads and save the rest for later.
Oh. I see, yes. Sorry... was reading it the other way around.
But not due to inactivity per se, alhough I understand what you mean.
What I seem to have witnessed is that it happens if you get logged out from the forums before reading threads that were marked unread on that session. Which is a bummer.
I seem to think, despite the option to always stay logged, we do get disconnected due to inactivity and the cookies or session id silently logs us back...
