    Who designed Java swing metal look&feel

    Yeah, its pretty ugly, but I'm sure it must be possible to reskin it. (if you have the time on your hands)

    it is, but I mean just by all that is holy, why would one not want a native look in a multiplatform gui API, or at least a more stylish skin qualities like GTK or qt.

    You can use SWT if you want native widgets.

    Well I can set the look and feel with the UIManager using swing so it's no problem, just addressing the fact that it's horrid
