So consoles are now using hard drivees, big deal, PC's have been doing that for 20 years.

I'd still be a pc gamer if it wasn't for
    1. The lack of diversity, genres rarely span outside the strategy and fps genre
    2. The subpar community online (hackers, cheaters, overall frequency of games with said players)
    3. The small list of games that are actually interesting available at any given time.

Also, being a PC fanboy got annoying to others after a while, I can see why.

hmm, looks like 1 and 3 are mostly the same reason's you have for hating the PC, isn't that odd.

I ........ on console fanboys as a reflexive habit, so don't take it personal.

All 3 points are untrue. These are your biased opinion.
There is a wide variety of genres and games on consoles (just look at Nintendo games!), the gameplay is as good as any other games on PC and there is a big list of games if you include all consoles or just take a look at old PS2 games.
Take it from someone who has actually played a dozen console games. They do not have subpar gameplay.

Especially considering the new generation consoles have radically different technologies to the PC?
THe PS3 has new technology developed by IBM in it's processors, blue ray invented by sony, Wii's new control method, etc.

    That is just untrue.

Which technology would that be? cellBE? Sorry to burst your bubble but that wasn't developed by IBM, Cray's patents are just running out.

    blue ray invented by sony,
just a more advanced version of the same technology used in CD/DVD.

    Wii's new control method, etc.
    cough cough POWERGLOVE cough cough.

You sure seem biased towards PCs...
While not radically different, they do have different technologies than PCs. Especially Cell, which was developed by IBM, Toshiba and Sony. Wii's control can already be used on PC, but was designed for the console.

and you seem biased towards consoles, so what, having a bias does not invalidate a conjecture.

'Cell' technology is nothing new, vector processing using distributed compute nodes on a single board or wafer has been aroudn for decades. Its just a new implimentation of existign technology.

As I said, AHEM POWERGLOVE. The wii control is nothing new. putting accelerometers into a control has been doen several times over the last few decades. teh Wii is just the first one to dumb the game down so that the innacurate nature of the controls isn't a problem.

Consol games being just as good as PC is as much your opinion as the 3 points are.

Certainly not, but I don't think all your points are particularly good, either...
Maybe it's just enough to say that consoles vs. PC games may just be opinions. However, genres and games are evenly spread out, if not in favor of, consoles. That much is pretty much fact, I think.

    You did say...
But the question is - can it be classified as new technology depending on how it was built and is being used or when the basic bits was invented? Come on, even if the individual PC parts existed, when put together, it would still be new technology.

I don't think there is one side is better than the other.
There are many excellent games for consoles. Nintendo games are just an example.
On the other hand, there are lots of good PC games too, such as Oblivion.
So I don't think you can say any side has an advantage here...

Only because it was an entirely new application of those components. Using processors to process a different type of data doesnt make those processors a new technology. If I invent some new problem to solve with computers, it doesnt make the computer a new invention.

There might be a wide variety of games on consoles, but PC certainly has A LOT wider variety of games. Proof of concept - OpenTTD & other tycoons.

When the Xbox360 came out it was nothing like any PC on the market, and it still isn't.

Oh and just because Cray used to make vector CPUs doesn't mean that the Cell isn't new technology. It took 3 major IT companies 7 years to develop, saying that it's basically just a Cray vector CPU is just stupid.

    This thread is dumb, sorry.

It didn't start off dumb, very tragic. The posters in it aren't dumb, but the thread is.

So unfortunately it lived up to its name

saying that it's basically just a Cray vector CPU is just stupid
I call it like I see it. I work with HPC every day, trust me cell is nothign new, just a new application of existing technology. Better performance yes, took development time yes, new idea no.
