Assuming you mean the source though, then I'm going to say not unless you're willing to shell out some money for a license.
Of interest though, might be the "clean room" Windows clone ReactOS, it should be open source.

In this case, Pure Curiosity comes with a price tag measured in multiple millions, and an NDA from hell.
Actually, universities and similar can get the MS Source Code - but it is restricted and probably requires a fair bit of "commitment" from the head of the university.

yeah, i was poking around on the msdn site, i noticed that they had the academic kernel but its significantly different from the kernel thats shipped. havent looked into quite how to get it yet.
Not that i need it for anything, i was just kind of curious.

Microsoft has been through lawsuit after lawsuit and have yet to reveal the source code for their kernel or any other portion of their OS. In my opinion they should not have to since the source code is rightfully theirs. Forcing MS to release their source code would be akin to telling GM they must allow Toyota to produce the Camaro and must provide all prints, machinery, processes, and materials.

Reverse engineering of a commercial software product is illegal. I know because we just sued a major university for infringing on our copyrights and patents by doing just that.Originally Posted by Alex31

yeah, i just wanted to know if there was any legal way to look at the code, didnt think there was, but i figured it would be worth a shot.
it was just one of those spur of the moment 'gee i wonder' posts.

oh, and just as a side note, i emailed microsoft about getting in on the academic without being apart of an accredited institution.
i dont expect anything to come of it.
frankly ill be surprised if i get a response to it, but ill keep you guys posted on it.
