I thought the RedBook was the standard for CD audio, but maybe someone used the name again for something else. Better check the books innards.

redbook is a widely used phrase. IBM has a whole section on their website for IBM Redbooks.

I think there's also one for some kind of automotive listings.

Red Book is used [generally] about books with red covers. The OpenGL programming book has a red cover. I don't know why that makes it different from other books with red covers.

There's a also a blue book, which in the US is a "book" [nowadays, I think it's also a web-site] with lists of pricing of used cars & motorbikes, with prices for what price you'd expect to buy & sell (private & dealer).

By the way, the official PostScript books come in various colours depending on what they describe - there's a Red, Blue, Green and White ones: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Red%20Book

That article doesn't mention the OpenGL book, for some reason.

    it goes back a ways:

    http://www.infoplease.com/dictionary.../red-book.html
    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/c...afletID=85&j=1
    http://www.infoplease.com/dictionary...exchequer.html
    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/m....asp?item_id=5

so I guess it means some sort of authoritative reference.
