does not work. it does create an inner set-in edge, but my toolbar and status bar are inside it, which is wrong. how do i make it enclose the inner area that doesn't have any controls in it yet?

That sounds like normal behavior. You can achieve the effect you desire several ways. The easiest would be make your window with a status bar and toolbar. And put a window with a sunken border inside the main window.
