'\n' question

I know what this does and all that, but when my teacher went over it she said it doesn't need the ''s in some cases, so it'd be

\n

not '\n'

is that correct? If so can someone show me in a segment of code because my compiler won't allow me to do this.

the newline char must appear between single quotes or double quotes.....

cout<<"hello\nGoodbye\n"<<flush;
cout<<"hello"<<"\n"<<"Goodbye"<<endl;
printf("hello\nGoodbye");
printf('\n');

always in some form of quotes
