I'd like to get a windows programming beginning book. I've seen a couple but am worried they might be out of date. Anybody have any recommendations for a good, thorough, up to date book?

Not out of date, they are old subjects that haven't been udpated much. Pertzold, and prosise's book's I own and read often. If you want a newer technology though you can use windows forms and or learn c#.
Like valaris said, I can recommend you "Programming Windows" by Charles Petzold. Also, a quite fun interesting read is Raymond Chen's blog The Old New Thing. Chen has worked at Microsoft since 1992 and in his blog he gives you many tips on how to do things right, and also explains how many things in Windows is the way they are today.
