USB Drives cause pc to freeze

    Hi.

I have formatted my laptop due to some 'issues'.

Since then I have updated Windows XP to SP2 and all the updates.

Everytime I plug in a USB device, it will work for a few minutes then the pc
    will completely freeze up.

the only response i can get is if press and hold the power button to turn it
    of.

Before I formatted my pc, this never happened and the usb drives workd fine.

    any advice on this?

Something changed in the HW configuration? It looks like power management problem...

Have you checked for the Chipset and BIOS updates on the site of the notebook company? Maybe XP_SP2 requires such updates?

I went to Compaq's site and had a live support chat with an technitian or whatever you wana call them.......described the symptons....(BAD IDEA).

"Dont worry sir, just update your BIOS".

    Tried that....fried my laptop.......

now the bloody thinh doesnt even want to boot........doesnt even do the POST....

Funny but my dad's system has an issue similar to that where my USB flash reader freezes it when running certain programs. I'm assuming it is the program's fault since both our systems are near identical and I haven't had that issue.

Also this is why having a motherboard with two BIOS chips rocks - if one is ruined, the other one is copied over top of it.
