Startup Lag: How Do I Pinpoint It?

Whenever I boot up my system, before it gives the Windows loading screen, it runs down the hardware attached (HD, CD ROM, etc). Well, one of those devices is causing my PC to lag bigtime at startup. I get a black screen with a white blinking underscore in the top left corner for about two minutes before the Windows loading screen comes up. I originally thought my PC needed cleaning up. I did a complete Hard Drive wipe, rezeroed everything, removed partitions, and then repartitioned and reinstalled windows. The problem did not go away.

Is there any way I can pinpoint which device causes the lag? A way I can tell what is trying to be accessed during the black screen with the blinking underscore? are there BIOS logs or something I can look at, or have my PC actually display each process that occurs on the screen?

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager
See if anything's got a yellow/black ! warning icon next to it.

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and recovery settings.
Make sure the "Time to display..." options are enabled.
When you next boot the system, press F8 to get a list. Try loading one of the "safe" mode versions to see whether it's a core device or something peripheral.

You can also create additional boot entries, using this as a guide.

But make sure you proceed carefully, this is one way to really hose your system if you delete or change too much.

Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> event viewer
Review the warnings and errors in the system event log to see if there are common occurrences around the time you boot for the same things.

If you are using the free ZoneAlarm that is the source of your lag. It takes forever for trueVector to fire up.

My computer doesn't have any startup lag, but I've seen people who need to wait 5 minutes to do something

Well Fried_Yoda, do you have anything else to contribute or did you just spam the problem all over the net in the hope someone will guess the problem?

You could try contributing with things you've since tried and any additional observations you've made.
