    Problems with modems under linux

I need some help with the modems I have for a laptop of mine; one of them is the built-in one and another is an external one I had lying around. The on is an Agere Systems AC'97 modem; the other is a US Robotics XJ4288 PC Card modem. I'm running a Debian 3.1 AMD64 version of linux; I'm pretty sure it's a 2.6.8 kernel.

I've tried scanModem for the internal modem but I couldn't understand what to do with the result.

I've reached my wit's end here, anything will help.

    Thanks in advance.

Agere Systems AC97 is a winmodem as is the US robotics modem.
both are designed to use windows to provide the majority of the functionality.

http://linmodems.org/ has a modem dection tool that will tell you what the actual chipset on the devices are, then you can get the kernel modules for those chipsets to install into the kernel and finally you can start to use the modems.
