    Bandwidth isn't an issue. Storage space isn't an issue. The server would be located on an LAN running at least GB speeds and would be behind (probably) two or three firewalls, so there wouldn't be a good way for anyone on the net to see it.

    GIFs it is. Thanks for the help. . . now all I have to do is find out how to write one .

    No, I mean for 6 colors??
    Can you tell me an image type that cannot handle 6 colors normally?

    JPEG can't. It cannot have one large region that's consistently in one colour. I consider that "not handling 6 colours". It handles a few million colours just fine.

    None visible, but there are differences. The JPEG actually uses thirteen different colours.
    And it's more than three times the size of the PNG ...
