    Angry Intel USB problem

    Hi.

Don't know if anyone can help me with this.

My pc's usb ports are malfunctioning.

I have determined that there is power in the ports, due to that when I connect my cellphone (Sony Ericsson W810i) to the port, it asks me if I want to switch to transfer mode or stay in phone mode. It also starts charging the batery. So there must be power on the ports.

Windows just does not pick up any device I connect on the usb.

Even my memory stick does not get picked up.

I have formated and reinstalled windows...user service pack 2...and still nothing.

I have reverted back to my original bios version....still nothing.

I downloaded drivers from alover the net...still nothing...

I downloaded the latest drivers for the mobo....still nothing....

In device management, Windows reports that all my Usb drivers and ports are working correctly

I dont know what to do next.

    Here is my system specs:

    WinXP Pro
    Intel P4 2.8 prescot chip
    Intel Bayfiled mobo D865GBF
    1GB Ram. (4 x 256 chips)
    80 gb SATA Maxtor HDD
    160 gb SATA2 Maxtor HDD
    ATI X1600 Pro AGP card
    Directx 9c

If you need any more system info, just let me know

    Thanks in advance

are your usb ports usb 1 and your devices usb 2 [ or the other way around ]

that would kill the device function.

Then I'm lost, since I have never had a usb device work on the wrong version port.
I've always had to use a usb 2 port for a usb 2 device and usb 1 ports for usb 1 devices.

For me, all ports have worked with all devices.

You checked the BIOS (installed latest version, reverted to factory version...), did you check to simply see if the USB ports were in fact enabled (my ASUS has a toggle for Disabled, USB1.1 only or USB 1.1 AND 2.0, perhaps you inadvertantly selected a "disabled" setting, or factory has it disabled or you have USB 1.1 only set or something, I am not familiar with the "Bayfield" mobo)...

Where on the case are the USB ports you are connecting to?

If they are on the front of the case (or side/top), then they might not have been attached to the mobo correctly. Did they ever work or is this a recent development? Or did you never try them before now? If you never tried them or they never worked, who built the computer? If it is something like a Dell or Gateway, call them. If it was a computer shop or a friend, call them. If you built it, check the USB cable connections and make sure you didn't miss or bend a pin when plugging the cable in (my el-cheapo case has 2 USB ports on the front, but the connector for them to the motherboard is all individual connections, each wire to a particular pin on the motherboard's USB pins).

How old is the computer? Has it been damaged in any way physically? Hardware does really funky things when damaged; anything from working perfectly to "working, except for the P key on the keyboard?!?!?!" (that was fun and the fix was to replace a stick of RAM, though I think the mobo might have been more to blame since the "offending" ram stick works fine in another machine), to not even POSTing. You've definitely made sure your phone works with your other computer properly? It is possible you damaged the cable instead of the computer being the problem, perhaps test with another device as well if you have one. Perhaps the phone just doesn't like this particular hardware...

    Hope this helps!

    lol...

I built the pc myself (yes I know what I am doing)

As for the usb enabled in the bios....yes it is...

the pc is about 2 years old. Never sufered any damage whatsoever.....

it always worked perfectly, this just suddenly happened, I have 4 ports at the back and 2 in front...and all of the was working...

Someone suggested that it might be my psu not being string enough...but how can my phone detect power from the usb port and charge the battery...

I think I'm gonna disconnect everything that my system does not need to start and see if it works...if not...the the psu is fine....

Get a Linux live CD and test the USB on it. If it works, at least you can rule out the hardware issues.

How about contacting the manufacturer and asking them?
