    First party tracking cookies Meow!

Meow! Tracking cookies are coming through as FIRST party tracking cookies Meow!

I blocked all third party cookies. This took care of the problem for a while. The isp has advertizing on the main page and the tracking cookies should and were coming through as third party cookies. Like getting caught with both paws in the cookie jar. We pay for service and the isp also uses advertizing for revenue is this fair? Like paying for tv with advertizing? The objection is that they use tracking cookies. I do not know if this is true for all isps but it is a disturbing trend.

How is it that the tracking cookies are coming through as FIRST party cookies? If they are supposedly assumed a third party? I know that there are some dll files that come with these evil things that will repair them that spybot does not delete.

I have look in to several sites like howsutffworks and wilipedia and done several searches with no more information than already knew.

How do I know it is the isp? Ok here is how. Ran spybot before logon clean box. Made sure computer setting was set to block all third party cookies. Logon then ran spybot again. Tracking cookies found.

    Meow!

Block all cookies from that domain? If the cookie is coming through as first party when you're not even on the site, then something is seriously wrong.

Must you clutter your posts with the onomatopoeia "meow", not to be a bastard or anything but it's silly, not cute.

Cookies don't upset me. As directed or explicit advertisement doesn't. One of the things I always found somewhat disturbing is the lenght of work people go in order to erradicate advertisement from their web experience. It's, for the most part, a battle you can't win. If you take a good look at it, you are constantly fiddling with browser options and third party software options to rend some form of publicity inoperable, only to visit a new site and find yet another one that needs to be added to your list, or configured in your software.

Does zapping during the commercial of your favorite show really works? All you do is exposing yourself to publicity from other channels while waiting for your show to resume. Concern should be security. Publicity... who cares?

I agree totally with Mario... I don't do much about cookies, other than clear them every once-in-a-while.

Another good example of where blocking something has become pointless is with popup ads. In the past they were a real nuisance, so browsers started blocking them. The catch with filtering out one type of ad is that another ad will rise to fill it's place. So now we have popup ads that don't appear until you click someplace on the site you are visiting.

Even better, instead of using popup windows, just use a second layer, which will show after something like 3 seconds as soon as the whole html is "rendered". You gotta love those javascripts :-P.

I've been wanting to say that for ages.

If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

<sarcasim> you must love rapcat </sarcasim>

it is the tracking cookies that i want to block meow. puter is set to block those sites and all cookies and yet they are coming through with the freeeeking block set! meow. i do not mind advertizement but why should a company know which sites i visit? if i want to visit or lurk on a dogcare site why should they have to know about that?

i have found dll files that spybot does not delete. after deleting them they come back! infected again. been browsing the virus removal sites. found nothing. was hoping for some help in fixing the problem. or atleast info on how if the block is set it is still getting by? ideas?

Also one leads to a "runis" directory but there is no runis directory when i use regedit. spybot said that one when clicked on "go to location" goes to "reinstall" entry. when this is deleted it still comes back. meow.

i follow the step by step removal manual instructions along with letting spybot remove or "fix problem" Also thought firefox would be better in safe mode which i have been using that way.
if no help ok. but privacy IS security thank you. onomatopoeia "meow"

It's a beautiful line. However it doesn't really apply to advertisement, now does it? But tell you what, have fun with trying to stop it. Woof! Woof!

One solution is to disable cookies altogether and have the security system reversed in order to only allow specific sites. Some software does this. Google for it.

    > it is the tracking cookies that i want to block meow.
Hm, are you sure that the cookies you are being sent really have anything to do with tracking your activity and aren't something mostly harmless (like a login cookie)? Some cookies are not dangerous, but Mario has the right idea: just set your browser to block all cookies and stop depending on third party software to do it all.

    > i have found dll files that spybot does not delete.
That sounds terrificly normal. I'm not terribly sure that you want spyware removers deleting DLLs. Doing that wantonly will just break things. This has nothing to do with advertising but once I allowed an uninstaller to delete a shared DLL and then afterwards my OS stopped drawing windows properly. Woops.

OK .... I know I got misunderstood and flamed for this before, but it doesn't change anything.

Advertising is perfectly OK when it is non-invasive.
Advertisements that track you around the Internet invade your privacy. End of story.

kryptkat, it sounds to me as if you've got a nasty infection there. If Spybot S&D won't deal with it, chances are you've got something really malicious such as Winfixer, Virtumondo, or whatever.

Head over to Malware Removal, read the rules, register and start a new thread in Malware Removal.

The good folk over there will talk you through everything you need to get you clear.

But they're right about the "meows": kryptkat, they don't look cool or funny, they really do only serve to make you look silly.

No, that was a piggish remark on your part....

Please, just clean your computer of spyware, and if you're really paranoid, just block all cookies.
