    X Windows / Gnome

I installed Redhat Enterprise AS 4.
I'm trying to get gnome to work, but startx errors out every time.
I want to have a gui interface for my server.
I can work with the command line, but I want the gui.

    (1) I believe I read once that this OS comes with out X Windows and Gnome, but I can no longer find this item of information. Does this operating system come standard (out of box) with out gnome and X Windows?

    (2) I have searched the RedHat site over and over, and have not found the package for gnome and X windows. Where can i find one that has been certified for this specific OS and is from RedHat?

RHEL comes with XWindows GNOME, and optionally (at install time) KDE.

Try running up2date gnome from the command line, or pop in the install cds if you still have them, you should be able to get it from there.

if i install gnome from the cds, does it erase all my data and changes i have made?
does it do a complete reinstall or just a rpm install?
the up2date gnome brought me to a numbered menu.
not sure what option to pick.

What are the options? its been a long time since ive used RHEL.

I'm not sure what options you'll have on the CD, type "help" at the prompt (after booting off the cd) to see. Don't run the installer again though, it will overwrite whatever partition you install on.

    (Q1)when ever i use
    Code:
    up2date gnome
    i get the error of
    Temporary failure in name resolution
What does this error mean? Is Redhat offline? I would think they would have servers online 24/7

(Q2) I inserted my disc 1 of redhat enterprise and rebooted.
This allowed me to go into the Upgrade Examine form.
    Here I have two options:
    1. Install Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS
    2. Upgrade an existing installation.
    I select #2

Next I'm at the Upgrade Boot Loader Configuration Form.
    I have two options:
    1. Skip boot loader updating.
    2. Create new boot loader configuration.
    I select #1.

Now I'm at the form About to Upgrade
I have only one option and that is click NEXT
But there is a warning of
Caution: Once you click Next, the installation program begins writing the operating system to the hard drive(s). This process cannot be undone. If you have decided not to continue with this installation, this is the last point at which you can abort the installation process.
Does this mean it will write over the configuration of my entire already installed operating system?
I did a lot of configuring already and do not wish to redo this. I also have files saved, and do not want to loose those either.

so i finally got brave and clicked next, but all it did was sit there and think for a few minutes and then tell me it was done. It didn't allow me to select packages for upgrade.
    No install of anything occured.
    Why is this?

q1. Not sure whats up with that, its something related to your internet connection though

q2. hmmm, dunno. I tend to avoid RHEL so I haven't seen the install process for a long time.

I'd try posting in a linux forum like linuxquestions.org . You'd probably get better help there. Or if you have red hat support, try that.

edit: what's likely happend is you chose "Server Install" or something like that, and a windowing environment is not part of the default packages. You'd need to choose custom install to pick gnome.
