    DSL and T1 prices

    I been thinking about doing something kind of fun and starting my own web hosting business to host internet radio servers for winamp or something fun like that.

    I have a good idea of how it all works. with a fair background of linux i've hosted my own teamspeak server before so i'm not going into this blindly. The only thing i feel a little dumb about is what kind of Internet Service will I need.

    For instance, at first I was thinking. hmm I'll need a T1 line most likely. So I went around on the internet looking for T1 prices one of the quotes from one company near me i found has
    * 384k $ 329.95
    * 768k $ 449.95
    * 1.5 Mbps $ 579.95
    Which to me seems kind of excessive, 580$ a month for 1.5 mbps?? Why are T1 lines so much more expensive than DSL, DSL at 1.5 mbps costs something like 40 a month.

    I just feel so confused. I thought if there would be somewhere right to ask, this would be it.

    Thank's in advance.

    T1 lines are more expensive because they're dedicated to you. They're also (in contrast to DSL) symetrical so you get the same bandwidth upstream as you do downstream.
    And they're business lines so you're getting higher availability guarantees, no restrictions on use, etc. (with DSL most ISPs will have restrictions on running servers on them for example, as well as bandwidth limits).

    Add the rental fee for the line itself (you're paying per kilometer to the telco owning the line, something you don't do for DSL).

    Full DS3 45Mbps $1999/mo or 24,000/yr. ';,.,;'.

    Webhosting is bloody expensive, but it can be worth it when you have enough adds :P.
    Code:
    Error W8057 C:\\Life.cpp: Invalid number of arguments in function run(Brain *)

    so a DSL line uploading won't really be 1.5 mbps, but a T1 line will?

    also im intending to buy a PC just for the purpose of being a server (i've never done this)

    i'm thinking a 3.0 ghz AMD with a gig of ram and big hard drive is all i need. does this sound about right?

    also is there a special kind of lan card i would need, or router becasue of the fact it will be a t1 line and not cable anymore

    If you have 1.5MB ADSL you're getting 1.5MB downstream. UPstream (which a server needs) is usually half the downstream speed for ADSL connections up to 2MB, and 1MB upstream for anything over 2MB downstream.

    There is also SDSL which offers the same upstream and downstream, and may be an alternative to a business line.
    It's also quite expensive though.

    Depending on the traffic you're thinking of that server may well be overkill. No special LAN card needed, consult your connection vendor for the hardware requirements (which likely indeed include a router).
    We've a customer running a server on which about 50 people are logged in almost constantly, that server is an old P3 with 128MB RAM. It doesn't run a streaming system like you're intending but should give you an indication
