    3d studio

I try to run 3d studio 3. Directly after it opens it prompts me and says:

    Hardware lock is not attached
or you are using the wrong lock
or the device drivers on the lock aren't working

The last sentence is a little off. Any ideas?

It means you should be quoting your registered user number to the company which made and sold all that stuff to you in the first place.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

the software probably requires what's known as a dongle...at least that's what it makes it sound like.

    Where did you get it?

    >Hardware lock is not attached
There's a little thingie that plugs into your parallel port. It's a security device to make sure that you aren't breaking the rules and using the software on more systems than you have licenses for.

    >or you are using the wrong lock
This could happen if you upgrade to a new version but fail to change the thingies to use the new one that they sent you.

    >or the device drivers on the lock aren't working
That's a hardware problem. You would need to call Discreet tech support and get them to send you another one.

If you don't have a hardware lock, you're trying to break the law.

I bought it from my friend who moved away just recently. The CD and case look like the real deal. I don't think he could have copied them.

Have you asked him if he had a hardware lock he forgot to give you?

No because I didn't know what the problem was and he only comes into town every other weekend.
