Temp Directory

Im cleaning up my hardrive and i uninstalled all my games large applications but i still only have 6gb's free space from my 40gb HD would it harm my computer to delete the

C:\WINDOWS\Temp

directory ? and is there any other places i should clean up?

There is a utility that comes with Windows called "Disk Cleanup" that will empty things like temp internet files and do some file compression and such. Also, make sure you are emptying your recycle bin and make sure you don't have a file-recovery program running that saves all the files you delete.

turn off system restore and file indexing...however if the machine has already been running with file indexing then that space is already taken up and can't be removed. But turning off system restore will delete all the system restore catalogs.

Well i just turned off system restore and ran GenDiskCleanup and gained 12gb i dont know where the rest of the space is going what's file indexing ill try turning that off?

If you turn off file indexing then bring a lunch the next time you have to search for a file on your HD. Without indexing your OS will have to brute force it's way through every directory and file until it finds what yer lookin fer.

sorry it took me so long i had to format and blah blah lmao. This is freeware so im going to outright post it. Its hosted by my .com but its not illegal. This program set to "full" cleaned my comp of almost a gig, my dads of 1.5gigs, etc. All unused crapola. I love this thing.

I've NEVER noticed any difference in speed of searching with indexing on/off on a decent pc...maybe something that's <=1.2ghz might show a diff. The only reason I suggested turning it off is because if you turn off indexing on a fresh pc you'll save a lot of space over the long run by not having all that meta data.

Delite it. It is not place on the computer for filling temp.
Temp is needed only when some program need place to extract and then when is install it can be delited.
Windows/temp is in the basic the same thing as Documents and Settings/Administrator/local settings/temp
Only that in Windows/temp is more likely that you will find virus.

Delite all. windows/temp, local settings/ temp and Temporary Internet files

Dont delete the folders.

xxxrugby: Documents and Settings/Administrator/Local Settings/Temp is not the same as a /Windows/Temp, because if you run a program as a different user (e.g. not Administrator) it will not save files in /Administrator/Local Settings/Temp, but in /$user/Local Settings/Temp. But any user can use /Windows/Temp...
