    Wait for the January sales!

But you just have to keep your eyes open for what appeals. I've just bought a Compaq, but it's more for business usage than recreation. You need to think what you want it for before going our to buy

Buy a copy of "Micro Mart" from the newsagent.
It has lots of ads for 2nd hand, surplus, reconditioned laptops (and other stuff)

A few weeks back I bought a dell inspiron 5160. Its a 3.06 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, CD/DVD RW, 64 MB gforce 5200 graphics card, 40 GB hard drive. I got it for £879 (including shipping). I'm quite happy with the performance although when the cpu usage go above 55% (even for a few seconds !!), the fan starts running like crazy and makes a lot of noise

Have the same problem, it's the P4 and that gforce 5200. I have a gateway M675, P4 3.0Ghz with a ATI Radeon mobile 9600. Those two items take more power and heat up quickly, it's the main reason all the notebooks are going to the Centrino (Pentium M). Very low power allowing for a smaller and light weight profile. Most P4 notebooks have 2 or even 3 fans in them, mine has 2. I'm kicking myself everyday when my thighs begin to heat up from the fan after about 10 minutes of use (well, the 17" screen on mine might also be a heating factor).

im getting ready to buy a laptop but i cant find one for what i want to pay. I want at least 60gigs of hdd space, 128mb vid card, 1.9GHZ (the higher the better, and preferably amd) and at least 512mb of ram.

Problem is i cant afford to spend more than 900.00 and im pushing at 900. If i cant find one im going to build a athlon 64 desktop.

Not that hard to find, try www.pricewatch.com. What is really going to drive up the price is that 128mb video card, cheapest I could find with a quick search was around $1,300. Drop the vid card to 64megs and I found a few under $900.

yea i found a few at 64mb. HL2 and stuff would run OK on those cards as long as they have 256bit 64meg cards. After a long convo with axon i have a few ideas.
