Problems adding a user in linux

Hi,
I just installed a fresh version of slackware. I tried adding a user using:
useradd -d /home/liaj -s /bin/bash -p xxxx -m liaj
gpasswd -a liaj users
but when i try logging back in, linux does not recognize the user. Anybody can help

Make sure your'e logged in as root

type adduser username and hit return
you will then be prompted for all th other info
