Ok, so right now I have windows 98se installed on my computer. Windows 98 came pre-installed on my computer, and I used a windows 98 SE upgrade version to get SE. Now, if I were to get the Full Version of Windows XP would I need to uninstalled windows 98 first? Also, would I be better off getting the upgrade version or the full version?
You dont need to uninstall it. And get the full version. Dont use the upgrade option, but rather do a full install and opt to format the drive to NTFS. Before you update to XP make sure tobackup all information as anything left on the HDD will be gone.
I dont WANT to format everything though. Is it possible to just install XP, and leave everything else be?

You would be much better off just doing a clean install.
Do you have a CD burner? If so, just put anything you cant get back on CD's.
Probably about 90% of stuff on most peoples PC's can be re-downloaded/installed.
But if you just upgrade your asking for some headaches.

to keep it you need to run xp on a fat partition, your then risking your data as its designed for ntfs. If you dont want to format, dont upgrade.
Well im sure these people wouldnt mind if you saved their work.
Asuming these people are in your house (e.g. family) ask each one if there is anything they want/need off of there before you wipe it.
But like RoD said.. if you dont want to do a fresh install then just dont do it.

You can get a gmail acount (nearly a Gig of space) or email your stuff to a friend and make him email it back.

you could always do it the way I do: double up on HD's, then in this case you can copy files to it and back later (but reinstall programs because some have DLL's and registry entries they need), then when you're done with that, clone your working disk to that one so you'll have a backup...
doing backups that way for me takes ~40 minutes for a 120GB clone (7200 RPM drives)

Oh and most programs that save work save it to a file. So you can also back up these "saved states" and pop them back after reinstalling the program.

If I remember correctly, you can convert the FAT32 partition to NTFS after XP is installed without loss of data.
Doesnt always work that way. Look ill even go as far as to let you use a few gigs of my hdd thru FTP to backup your data, just to make sure you do it the right way.
