Win98 First Edition Share internet through router.

I am working on a friend's pc (fossil Win 98 1st edition). They had all kinds of spyware which I have deleted. I am now trying to set it up to share my cable connection to speed up the process of downloading updates.

Currently I have file sharing enabled, so I could easily copy over AdAware, Spybot ect. Both pc's can ping each other, and my pc (Win2k Pro) can ping the router, but my friends pc times out when I try to ping the router, or any www address!

I need some pointers on what to try next!

I have used this method before to fix other pcs' and had no troubles but I have no experience with Win98 first edition. I thought because I am using a router that setting up internet sharing would be just like Win98SE.

Check the router connections. Make sure all lights are green to indicate there is a good connection between the router and the computer hooked into that port on the router. Also make sure the LAN card is installed correctly and the drivers for it work under Windows. The only thing keeping you from pinging the router is either a connection or faulty LAN card drivers. Make sure the LAN card is not conflicting with any other cards in the system. Not being able to ping the internet is a whole different ballgame.

Lights on the card and router should be green. Any yellows indicates a possible problem as well as no lights at all. Attempt to DMZ the computer in question through the router and see if it can then reach the internet. If you still cannot even reach the router, the problem is elsewhere. That would point to drivers, Windows, mobo settings, etc.

Thanks Bubba for the reply. I did try DMZ'ing the pc with no success. All my connections are good. I am thinking that I'll try reinstalling the drivers although I see no conflicts! I think I just need to reinstall the OS. Before I got the pc, the last time it had been defrag'ed was 776 days ago!
