    corrupt fs stop message

Ok, I was doing some (fall) cleaning on my pc's today. And on my main pc I ran the windows repair option from the install cd so I could re-enumerate hardware and start off with a freshly installed system without losing all my installed programs and my settings. I had sp2 installed on this machine. The other machine with sp2 took the reinstall just fine. This machine however greets me with a stop message every freaking time I boot telling me to run chkdsk. I've run chkdsk /r on both hard drives in this machine a dozen times already today. The last several times it hasn't mentioned finding and fixing any errors. Yet when I try to run bootcfg it dies telling me I need to run chkdsk. I've ran fixmbr and fixboot and neither help any. The last thing I'm going to try as soon as this is done running chkdsk again is manually copy ntldr, ntdetect, and ntoskrnl from the xp cd and see if that helps any. After that I'm going to try and disable the secondary hard disk and see if it's the culprit. Beyond that I'm lost, anyone know what kind of trouble I'm having here? As far as I can tell, xp would've used the drivers for my discs that I was previously using (which worked). Thanks.

Interesting scenario. I'd have to say it doesn't like the fact that you're not starting with a clean disk. Failing your next attempts, that's what I'd do next, unfortunately.

ok I basically figure it's a device driver that isn't getting installed correctly on the in place reinstall. So here's what I did to figure that out. I renamed the windows folder to something else and even moved it (via making a copy of it and then deleting the original to ensure the folder was at a different spot on the drive in case it was physically damaged...unlikely). Then I made an entry for it in boot.ini. I did a fresh install of xp into a fresh windows folder. That boots fine, if I try to boot into the other copy of windows, it dies the same way. I did notice that each time I ran the repair it said it wouldn't install a driver because it didn't pass logo testing, rather than asking me if i'd like to install anyway...what a POS. Anyway, I'm just reloading everything from scratch now...cept I can't get rid of the backup windows folder...I'm still working on that.
