Arrow Connecting to Internet using Linux

    Hi!
I recently dual booted my computer and installed Red Hat Linux 9.1 on it.
The problem is that I cannot connect to the internet with it. I have created a Modem connection in the administrator mode, but whenever I click on the Activate button, the external modem gives the sound of the dial tone, but doesn't dial any number.
It cancels the connection and an error mesage reads- "Failed to connect to Net with error 8"
I have mentioned the details like the phone number etc.
The stupid ISP call centre says that they can only help with Windows problems.
    Can anybody help?
    Thanks.

As with all things, pasting your error message into google is probably a "good thing"
Here's what I found in a couple of minutes

If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Look on the bright side. If you're in India, odds are you're close enough to go to the call center and give them hell!

um, i heard that some modems, arent actualyl complete hardware
wise, that something in windows emulates parts
that linux doesnt have support for, which could be a reason your
modem isnt working, so if your 56k modem is poopy
then that could be a cause, but thats what i ehard i dont
know enough about it to elaborate on it.

I don't think. Most of the call-centres are in Bangalore, while I stay in Mumbai.

generally if linux can find the modem at all, then it's either a hardware modem, or a linux compatible software modem. You may need to A. update the driver or B. check your ppp config for errors.
    PHP and XML
    Let's talk about SAX
