Reconfiguring for Broadband - anything I need to know?

There's a lady at my church that recently switched to Broadband, but says her computer is always wanting to dial in to something, and wants me to take a look at it. I'm guessing it's just a software issue, but anything you guys think I need to know? I myself have not made the switch to broadband yet.

umm... you probably need to turn off the option of dialing in the internet connection settings. Change it to using the LAN (most likely since she's probably connected to the modem/router.

If she's using IE then there's an option under internet options->connections that should be checked that says "never dial a connection"

Yup that, OR you can just run the new connection wizzard and set it up for broadband. Its pretty self-explanitory. Just pick "Set up my connection manually" and "Using a connection that is always on" and that crap.

If it dowsnt work after that remember to unplug the modem for a few seconds and plug it back in.

Most, if not all modern domestic routers will act as a PPPoE terminal. If she doesn't have a router, some software to terminate the PPPoE will be provided by the ISP. It should not be necessary to dial up anything.

I think she simply needs some settings changed.

Are you saying your ADSL is not "on" all the time?

it is on all times... But when you start the PC the connection has to be initiated if your ISP uses PPPoE method of authentication... this can however be automated....

My router terminates PPPoE and is not powered down. The software supplied by TeleDanmark may do this if you do not have a router. Whatever, I do not believe a correctly configured ADSL connection should require the computers user to "dial" anything at all.

in actual sense it is not dialing since I doubt it reaches the exchaneg switch.. I think its more of telling the modem to initiate a data session with the local DSLAM..
