    Wierd internet problems....

I just moved to canada, and since I've gotten here, the only programs I've been able to use that can connect to the internet are browser programs. Every other program that connects to the internet and isn't a browser just fails (like games and software that tries to update itself).....any reason why this would happen? I've moved to canada from the states, but i don't see why i wouldn't be allowed to see servers anymore that i usually could go to all the time...

Did you set the latitude when you moved north?

Did you also install XP-SP2 and enable its firewall?
Or some other external firewall in say a router you own.

Failing that, ask your ISP to see if they can tell you where the connections are failing.
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

Your ISP might block every port except 80. That would explain it.

I believe shaw is our ISP. I've never had an ISP before that blocked every port but one...that seems kinda ridiculous to me...oh, and my FTP program still works too, WS_FTP95...so, i dunno. I'll probably just call my ISP and see what's up.

It's quite common to block every port except 80 and 21 in local networks for organizations. But if an ISP would do such a thing in Sweden, they wouldn't get many customers.

What version of XP are you using?

If SP1's firewall is on... thats a problem. SP2 asks you if you want to keep blocking an app or not.

Is your setup ANY different than before you moved?
    What is C++?

not at all, i had sp2, but immediately after I installed it, i couldn't connect to the internet anymore, period, and i didn't even have the firewall on! So i had to use system restore to go back to my old config and then everything was back to the same. But, well, the ONLY thing that's different afaik from now and from back when i was in the states is we have a different modem now...so, yah.

I just sent an email to my ISP, will probably call them once we get a phone if I don't hear back from them.

I wonder if the modem has anything to do with your Windows "location" settings...

Like if your windows still thinks your in the states? Does anyone know if that has anything to do with it????

    EDIT:
If you do get this figured out you will let us know right!? This is one of those things you just HAVE to know the answer to
