partition for windows and linux files

someone told me this before but i forgot.. i have windows running on one harddrive and about to have linux on the 2nd, but the hard drive is realy big (120 gigs) so im thinking i could use 60-70 gigs for linux and the rest for both operating systems (to store files like mp3s that i might want to have access to on both OSes) what type of partition do i make to do this?

yea thats fine, if you use ext2 or ext3, as far as i know you
wont beable to see it in windows, there may be a driver out
that will let you do stuff. But if whats only important is you seeing
part of the 120 GB that you store documents and mp3's and stuff
on you should prolly use FAT32, but i know that linux mandrake
10 has the ability to read from ntfs, but i dont know about writing
or coping from it. But if you use FAT32 i believe you will beable
to write and read from linux as well as windows.

also you should mention what version of windows and linux
you plan to use?

Use FAT32. Your linux OS will not be able to create new files on an NTFS, and windows cant read ext[2-3] FS's.

fat32 is the way to go, unless you have a network drive somewhere onto which you can set up a samba share, then windows and linux can both read/write to it...and fyi, the linux kernel has been able to read ntfs for quite some time, since 2.2 I think....definitely since 2.4, and mandrake 10 runs kernel 2.6 (2.5 could write to ntfs, but it wasn't as safe as they thought so they totally scrapped and rewrote that part of the code)

ah interesting to know wasnt to sure about it, have only used
linux here and there to experiemnt, dont really know to
much about it.

I love linux, but the only thing holding it back is hardware support. As soon as they come up with some sort of unified standard for drivers/driver packages and come up with an easy way to add/remove hardware (like how windows does it) I'll switch over to it completely...of course a few good updates to WINE would be good too, I don't want to leave my games behind
