Try giving us some more info, what OS especially...

If you are running windows a way to improve speed is installing ad-aware and spybot search and destroy both are free and can be found by http://www.google.com, remember to update first both programs, also immunize your system with S&D...
These programs should improve performance especially when browsing on the internet...

Also a run with scandisk should be able to solve your poblem (that is if you are running windows ) because maybe the system shutted down once while trying to copy a file and the file is somewhere on the hard disk but not reall there...Donīt know how to explain it...anyway scandisk should be abl to find any lost HDD space on the system...

Thats all i can suggest for now since you are not really giving alot of information here.

Ah you beat my while i was typing man you want a fast reply...

Also for a sluggisch comp if you dont want to format everything i suggest you look into the software that is installed at the moment, uninstall all useless software...

With tis i mean that when you for example install yahoo messenger it will also install all other useless things like yahoo search bar and others, you can easily uninstall this without affecting the messenger itself...
Uninstall programs which are never used at all...

Also checking the registry and cleaning your registry should be a good thing to do, i know there are some programs to do this but i cant relly come up with the name right now (anyway there also free, since i see u like free things :-D ).

Well if it always hangs its a different thing, does it really hang or does it restarts??

If it restarts you should close all applications which can be possibly writing or opening any file at the moment...
Best way to do this is to press alt - ctrl-del and terminate all processes and apps except for explorer and some other vital system applications and of course your scandisk.

    greets,

Read all my posts and follow my guidelines, run scandisk first ( yes it take a while but you need to be patient ), also choose advanced options bvefore running and select clear lost file fragments ( dont know the literal english translation but that should be close to it ) + select fix problems automatically...

    [edit]
also use instead of standard conrole type the extended controle type ( so it will scan for errors as well on yourn harddisk
    [/edit]

Let it run, in the menwhile go relax and drink something or go out for a walk. When its done, come back and tell me the results...

lol, Joanna, have you even looked ANYTHING up on your own? I mean, everyone here is up for helping, but come on now.

How big is your HD? If you're running 98, I'm assuming it's not too suped up. What if you're really out of space?

Don't run too many programs. go to www.download.com and search for ANYTHING posted here. Reg cleaners, Reg optomization guide, Sybot, Adware.

Go to run and type in msconfig, and turn off programs that u don't need starting up. Unistall useless crap.

If all this fails (or if you can't do anything without a direct url), tell us what you use your computer for. Maybe there's something you're not telling us.
