I'm having a Dell laptop as well and i cant say anything good about the customer support, the only replies or support i got from them was :"Sorry we can't help you, but you can buy a new system at a very low price blabla...".

Anyway thats my experience with the support ( of course this is totally dependant on who is in charge of it in your own country but with me they dont give support at all unlike IBM dozn here. )

Hey everyone, thanks for all the replies.

I went with the Toshiba, and am actually typing on it right now (following in XSquared's footsteps ).

Since the Compaq's 64-bit/GeForce setup wouldn't necessarily beat the Toshiba, and I could grab a DVD burner at any time for relatively cheap, the Toshiba's extra whatchamacallits (the touch-and-launch thing is pretty fun to play around with) gave it the edge - plus, I've never heard any complaints against Toshiba notebooks, and I know at least two people who have them (and I have a black and white 10-inch 20mhz one my uncle gave me a loooong time ago which never had any problems other than slowness).

As for Dell, controversy just frightens me, especially when it's entirely possible that both sides are right - and there's no guarantee that I won't end up on the "it's bad" side

I also briefly considered an Averatec, slightly cheaper and more powerful, but the batterly life of 1.25 hours max kind of scared me off

I would also have considered the Satellite A70-RT1, cheaper and slightly less powerful, but none of the stores I went to had it in stock (Futures Shop and Staples)

And so, here I am with the TS1 at) $2336 (including taxes) for the notebook, 3 year warantee (2 years in-store service), and a 128-mb USB2.0 jumpdrive. As a side note, this whole wireless thing is bothering me, because my neighbours have a wireless network set up without WEP and my wireless keeps automatically connecting to theirs (802.11b, DSL Lite it seems) and will hardly ever let me connect to my own (802.11g, cable)

    XSquared:
    a) I'm planning to go to UWaterloo. Where're you at?
    b) Before you formatted, did you notice a DVD-RAM driver in your programs list? Because I'm looking at one and going like "WTF!"...

P.S. This is my third re-type, thanks to my hitting back 3 times - once on the touchpad, once on backspace, and again on the touchpad... I gotta see if I can disable the touchpad one or something...

I'm going into first year CS at UW. Guess I may be seeing you in a couple of weeks.

    Nope.
Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

You. Fetch me my copy of the Wall Street Journal. You two, fight to the death - Stewie
