Internet to get speeds of 10 gps-40 gps: Fiber Optics

Well, now that everyone hates me, and my rating has gone to I am sillyI am sillyI am sillyI am silly, I've got another article to give to the masses:

Wired News: Internet gets Fiber Optics

Looks promissing. Hope broadband and cable price goes down because of the new technology.

You have to remember that a lot of provider's networks struggle with current speeds. Most of them would have to completely redo their entire network infrastructure, which sure isn't cheap.

Yeah, look how long it's taken to get widespread broadband. It's kind of like the internet equivalent of HDTV.

It'll be a while before your local ISP installs anything like that, IMO.

yeah, it's not only running the lines, it's swapping out every router, switch, access point, etc. in their entire infrastructure...we're talking millions of dollars. That and it would have to be completely rethought, with that kind of bandwidth can you imagine the lag that would then be possible?

What do you mean by the lag?

He means incredibly low ping times. Such as nanosecond pings instead of milliseconds.

well sort of, but what I really meant was that if you're uploading/downloading at speeds like that, and a lot of people are on the network, imagine what would happen if the hardware hits it's limits? Connection throughput would be down to what dialup is or less. The technology may be there, but the hardware to control it in a networking environment is far off...hot computers today can access 3.4gb/s in ram, that's waaay under 40, and the throughput would be much less when it comes to an ethernet controller. Hell my network here at home has never gone over 10-20mb/s even though it's meant for 100mb/s.

    >even though it's meant for 100mb/s.
    It's rated at 100mbps, which is 12.5MB/s.

Megabits Per Second. Took a while to figure that one out myself.

well its not meant for end user systems but for networks that carry thousands of users data...

You know, we gotta change this language filter to something else. My suggestion is "John 3:16". Heh heh heh...

well that'd be fine then, but from the way we were talking about it (especially when ISP came up) I just thought we were talking about the average user...that would be a disaster, lol.
