    Exclamation Copying Linux

    Here's the problem-
My friend, who won't be in town for long has brought with him Red Hat Linux 10 CD's. I wanna install Linux on the new Compaq PC I'll be buying soon. But when I burneed the first CD,the CD-R does not start up during boot. (I use XP presently). How do I make the copy to start by itself?
Please reply as soon as possible.
    Thanks,
    -bookworm.

Hve you tried it with the original CD? Also make sure in bios you have it set to boot from the CD drive first.

Please excuse my noviceness, but could you kindly specify how do I change that setting on my Compaq Presario laptop?
    Thanks again.

P.S.- Yes, it does work with the original, but as I said, I need the copy for my new PC.

Study your CD burning program more closely - look for how to burn a bootable CD
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

    just as an aside...

    > Red Hat Linux 10

There's no such thing .... RHL ended at version 9. then came RHEL (red hat enterprise linux) and Fedora Core. what exactly are you trying to install?

just do a disk to disk copy, this has to work! otherwise get a copy (trial) of cloneCD, this will surely get the job done...

Well, it says that its Red Hat Linux Ver. 10 on the top. It came with the Linux Bible by Christopher Negus. And yes, its a Fedora and Enterprise Edition.
I think probably that since I used the Windows CD Writer Wizard, probably the CD is not bootable. Is it possible that the CD boots itself if I burn it using Nero? I've asked my friend to get the Nero CD tommorow.
I did a search for Writing Softwares which allow to create bootable CDs, but they ask for which file to open first. That's the problem, I don't know. I can't find out. The CD runs during startup and hence I can't find out.
In any case , here are the files that are present in the root of the disk. Do you know for SURE which file causes the auto boot?

dosutils---Folder (An "autoboot" dls file and a folder, "autoboot" folder here)
    Fedora---Folder
    images---Folder
    isolinux---Folder
    eula---txt file

    Unknown Applications---

compaqs bios setups are close to useless. well at least the ones ive used have been.
if you cant change the cdrom to be bootable first then it wouldnt surprise me

you probably can make the CD bootable as your first device, and since the original disk worked, I'm guessing you have that configured correctly, but for future reference, when your system is booting up, watch the screen and it'll give you an F key to hit to get into setup. once you're there, look around for boot device priority (or a similarly named menu item) somewhere in there and set your CD drive above your hard drive. if you can't you could always create a floppy that you system will boot off and have the floppy tell the system to boot from the CD...

I finally managed to get the CD's copied. I used NERO and made an image of the CD which I then copied into a CD-R. Hope Linux keeps up to my expectations. I love programming with VB.net. I want to try out GNOME programming now.
    Linux, here I come !!!

Agree, it gave me intense headache. And when I looked around (in linux forums), people experience the same thing
