XP shutting down problem
My computer has been having some problems shutting down, it doesn't. I haven't installed any new programs/hardware and I've checked for virus and spyware. Some times a "program has stop responding" window pops up with the program name as "you shouldn't see me". I have to pull the power plug to turn it off. Are there any programs that can help me debug this problem. I'm running XP. Thanks
JMD

From what I've read, it is the result of certain drivers running on your system, one person cited the latest NVIDIA display drivers as a culprit. 4 in 1 drivers were also stated as causing this problem. It's not spyware or a virus, it's a driver that will not release it's hold on the system. Have you updated your drivers recently? Try rolling back to previous versions.

I agree with ober about the drivers most likely being the problem, but I would try a good registry cleaner before changing any drivers. That seemed to be the solution in the cases I read about.
jv16 was mentioned in one of the posts I read about the problem, you can get jv16 RegSupreme here: http://www.jv16.org/

I do not recommend registry cleaners. Most are not safe and can do more harm than good. Windows is a fragile OS that is VERY dependant on the information in the registry. If you do decide to use a cleaner, make sure you do backups of your registry first.
