    RAM or HARD-DISK

My DAD back home is having trouble with his system... He gest a error saying location CF018F-BFF8AD97 is wrong, corrupt or something...

I suspected that it might be corrupt RAM sticks or the hard disk... Does anyone know to what this kind of an address corresponds to...

Well, when does it happen? On boot up? In Windows?
An address like that could mean anything...

Does he get any beep codes, can he boot at all?

If he doesn't get any abnormal beep codes and he can't boot into windows, it would most likely be a HD failure.

Does he get the error while the system is running? While it is booting? While doing it's self checks? As with the others, there really isn't enough information here.

That is not a memory location. It is probably an address related to the NTFS file system and therefore the error is on the hard disk.

Reboot with XP cd in the cd-rom and make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD-ROM prior to the hard disk. If not, your system will boot from disk first since it will see the OS on the hard disk before it sees the CD-ROM.

    Select Install Windows XP.
Select Repair Previous Installation of XP.

    This should fix it.

If not, go to the repair recovery console and copy all your needed files to another drive. Remove the NTFS partition and re-partition the drive. Then XP will also reformat the drive for you.

However, since NTFS is a self-repairing file system based on indexes you should be able to fix this problem - if you are using NTFS, but it looks like you are.
