    why is this?

    My work computer is running Windows 2000. It has been running non-stop without a reboot for at least 5 weeks. It has not lost a single ounce of performance at all. Programs run excellently. It never stalls. It is fast and efficient.

    My home computer is in good shape compared to most non-computer-peoples' home computers, but it is not near as "bugless" as my work computer. It is running Windows XP. It stalls on occasion (mostly when playing games). And a weird quirk or two will happen every once in awhile. There will be times when slowdowns will occur and a reboot is necessary.

    I am sure I am not the only who is like this. Why the crap don't our home computers behave like our work computers???? GRRR!!!

    I was a little peeved at my Gatway laptop (XP pro) it was always locking up and just misbehaving in general even after clean installs. So I finally installed Win 2k Pro on it and I don't think I'll ever go back!

    Runs just as good as my desktop pc, also running Win2k. I have lots of software/games installed on both computers. I think XP is a little lacking on the stability end of things, but thats just my two cents.

    Some might say that, but that is impossible.

    XP and 2k use the exact same kernel.

    Not really. Win2K is NT 5.0 and WinXP is NT 5.1.
    Apart from that, XP is tweaked so that it's more responsive (or made to look that way) than 2K which, being more workplace-oriented (kinda) gives more priority to disk and that kind of stuff.
    At least it looks to be that way.

    I have XP and 2K (2K at work, XP at home) and don't have problems with either. However, other people here at work have XP and it does a very odd thing. The users have said that it dogs a bit doing even simple operations... and these aren't crappy computers... 2GHz+ and 512 mb RAM. The problem is that everytime you do something, XP tries to make sure that all the networked drives are still connected. And since we have ~12 mapped drives, it makes the whole machine bog.

    The kernel is fine, aside from the odd security hole. The new explorer.exe shipped with XP is not so good.
