    Unhappy NIC Troubles?

    I am trying to troubleshoot a friend pc. He is running Win2k Pro. I have set up his pc at my house to use my broadband connection to download all the updates he is missing.

    My config. is 1 Desktop pc running Win2kPro. and 1 laptop running XP Pro thru a DLink router. Runs flawlessly. I have DHCP set up to obtain addresses automatically.

    Trouble begins when I connect his comp. to my network.
    On BOTH his machine and my Desktop machine I will intermittantly get 'Network cable Unplugged' popups. I don't understand this part, something weird going on here.

    I am thinking his Intel PRO/100 VE NIC is possibly bad? I might just go buy another one to test this theory out. I've tried swapping out cables and it makes no difference.

    When I set up his pc's NIC manually with the correct ip parameters NOT with automaic config it works better but still get the weird error about being disconnected.

    I can ping thru my LAN both to and from his pc.

    Any ideas?

    It sounds like a flaky router to me.
    Naturally I didn't feel inspired enough to read all the links for you, since I already slaved away for long hours under a blistering sun pressing the search button after typing four whole words! - Quzah

    Router?

    How could it be my router, this only occurs when his pc is connected to my network?

    weird, yes.

    if you've switched the cables and what not, try a new NIC on your friends PC. Just take one from another comp on the network instead of buying another one.

    let us know what happens.

    Lots of spyware, several worms, a few trojans, dialers:
    Welchia, Lovesan, blaster to name a few...

    I can't believe this computer works at all. I am winning the battle I almost have all the updates installed. Wow, I was up until 7 am. At least I won in the end
