    Wi-Fi(ing)

    Anyone here framiliar with net stumbling/war driving. I set up a hot spot on my LAN so that anyone can drive/walk by. Anyone else here done that yet? Would you (do you) take advantage of these free waves? Or is it unethical?

    My opinion is that if you have an unsecure wi-fi that is openly available to the public (perhaps not by consent) then it is completly fair game. However, if you'd have to break a 48 or 128+ encryption to get in or have a password, then stay away because its clearly off limits.

    Yeah, I live in Arkansas where we're getting a surge of wi-fi and war drivers. I'd like to see wi-fi come in on the cell towers...that'd be super!

    why not. some ISP in paris is offering wifi connections at blazing speeds. as for encryption, my step brother only picks up one network in his flat which he found was the police. so he didn't make much of an atempt to get in

    If someone downloads some illegal material, kiddie porn, terrorist stuff or whatever through your gateway, who will the authorities come down on?

    Not me, for example.

    {edit}

    I'm just an average user, with an unsecured AP.

    just claim you were hacked. thats an excuse hackers use in court. they say they were infected with trojan and their computer was used by someone else. i don't know if it works alot, but its worth it i suppose.

    Then...set up with a filter/sniffer/ etc and makesure to keep logs. Show the police that you're willing to cooperate and give then date, time, MAC address, signal strenght to indicate distance. Then set a filter to keep it clean...disallow dirty words etc. or whatever you have to do. I know someone this happened to and next day he had up 512-bit system up.
