For our Beowulf cluster we are currently using Red Hat 9. However, the machines we're using are crap (currently we are test running on a P2 266 w/ 64 megs of edo ram and a P2 333 (i think) with 394 megs of pc 66) and don't run red hat very well. Can anyone recommend some lower overhead distributions to try for our project?

Gentoo (runs fine on a P-MMX 200 w/ 64MB).

I use Slackware, its sturdy compared most other distros out there.

it runs ok.
some stuff lags.
From reading on the freebsd site, I have found that they claim their version of unix runs exceptional on older archaic technologies like 486 & 686

Our eventual goal is to get a bunch of ancient machines to do this with as a cost cutting/ can it be done kinda thing. All I know at the moment is that Red Hat is WAY too much overhead to actually use for this, considering how slowly the two boxes we have setup now are running.

Now I know why its said to be more secure that GNU/Linux.
