    Poor Internet connection

    Hello everybody,
My Internet connection speed is always very low than my modem's speed (I use a USB modem). I think this is because the poor telephone signals. Sometimes the connection suddenly breaks up. Can anybody tell me a way to speed up my connection speed a bit.
    Thanks.

    Talk to your phone company.
See if they can either test the line for signal quality, or perhaps tweak the line to be more suitable for data transmission
If you dance barefoot on the broken glass of undefined behaviour, you've got to expect the occasional cut.
If at first you don't succeed, try writing your phone number on the exam paper.

I believe there is a difference in speed depending on the quality of your modem. Some have better packet recovery than others and while you won't notice a difference on a good phone line on poor lines/switches there will be a big difference. If the modem you are using is a software modem, try a hardware modem generally they are better on poor phone lines.

I recommend switching to an internal modem... you may or may not have a slight boost in speed, but part of your problem could be your USB connection.

If you go internal, get an intel/ambient 537 chipset modem....cheap, and the best modem you'll ever buy. I have crappy phone lines too, most of my modems connect at 24kbps, but this thing always connects at 44kbs or higher over the same line. I picked mine up for 9 bucks. Well worth it. And they have drivers for linux (if that's why you're using external).
