    Hosting

Would i notice a drop in performance if i host a website on my pc with mysql and apache? It'll only be on my main pc for a few weeks. I have Comcast and download at an average of 1-2mb per second with a max of 4mb per sec (rare).

    Comp is a XP1800+ @ 2.307GHZ w/ 512MB PC3200 DDR.

Depends on how much traffic you get really.

Question is... will Comcast give you a static IP? I think not.

edit: So unless you plan to email your IP out to everyone everyday (not impossible), I think this idea would suck.

actually ober there are ways around that problem. One possible way is to setup a BIND DNS server. I'm working on that now.

Also from some friends I hear that Comcast hardly ever goes down in such a way that you get a new IP.

That means nothing. What is your upstream bandwidth?

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought DHCP only issued 24-hour IP leases.

That may be true, but chances are extremely good that you'll get the same IP back again, because the time between the lease expiring and your computer renewing it is so small that no-one else has a chance to grab it.

It also depends on the DHCP configuration. A good portion are setup to record your MAC address along with the IP address. As such it will hand out all other IP address before reassigning IPs that have been "claimed." So each time you have to renew it'll give you the same address.
