    drive letter

    when i installed xp i had my old xp hdd in here to take the files off, and since it was labeled as "c:\" on my old pc with xp on it, the new xp labeled that secondary "c:\" and my main drive "e:\".

    I have removed the backup drive and it is still "e:\", can i change that to "c:\" without reformatting?

    control panel->system management->computermanagement
    (it is possible that the names aren't correct because I have a dutch version of XP)
    there you can enable/disable your volumes and perhaps change the order of them too.

    i was able to populate the volume but not edit the letter assignment, no option too. I thought partition magic might have done it but i want to be sure i can do it. I know in win98 you could do it to cdroms from a menu in system properties.

    Changing your system drive letter is problematic as the registry is full of "path=E:\..." references.

    A third party utility may be able to fix the registry but windows can't do it and will wisely refuse to change the drive letter.

    What's wrong with using "E:" as your main drive?
