    Comcast/XP

Ok, heres the idea. My cable modem for comcast is hooked up to my dads pc, and his pc is networked to my pc. I setup two connections on his pc.

One for the home network, called HOME, and one for the comcast connection called COMCAST. I shared the COMCAST connection, and that part worked. The windows xp firewall is disabled on that connection.

So i got to my pc, and the network is operating fine. I can access him, and visa versa. But i cant figure out how to use the comcast connection to access the net.

I've tried every xp wizard and manual, istn working. But the comcast connection is showing in my network connections.

His pc is set to fully auto obtain ip addy's, and mine is specified as 192.168.0.2 in the alternate. Heres a screen shot, any ideas?

Get a router hook the cable modem up to the router. Then you can ignore all the XP networking crap

    Bah routers are cheap

Have you tried creating a bridge between the two on his computer?

Here's how it works for my LAN. Use the wizard in XP to set up the connection, and then delete the MAC bridge it will probably have created, for me, that fixes it, and if I don't delete whatever it is it created it won't work. (Internet is through my dad's PC, and me and my brother suck from it fine)
I don't think a bridge will work, but you should probably try.
    EDIT:
You could delete all connections and just put your dad's PC as the default gateway, with it's internet connection shared.
Also, use your dad as the primary DNS, that might be a problem, if it doesn't know where to look for info.

i tried bridgeing them, nothing. So i deleted the mac bridge (which it didnt create until i bridged them) and the network is still ok, but no go on the internet on my pc.

I tried setting up gateways with both his ip and the comcast ip address, nothing......im going to try a few more things ill report back ina bit.

when you create a new network, use the wizard and specify that his will connect directly to the internet, and other computers will connect through it. And set up the opposite on the other computer, it's not that hard. You don't need 2 connections per computer, that's prob. whats throwing it off.

what you people are not realizing is that many cable companies only give you one IP, one IP in most cases == one computer. Comcast is one of those companies I believe. My cable company required one to fork up extra dough, usually 5 dollars a month, for every extra IP address. In order for his networking to work, he will have to purchase another IP adrress in order to share it.

Your right, your 100% right about the IP adress.....damn i cant believe i missed that. I got IE/kazzaa working with this proxy program (sets up a proxy server on my dads pc and i connect to it), just gotta get aim working on it now and what not....ima make him buy another ip since im paying for this connection.

Cost over time for an extra IP > cost of a router

Don't mind me I'm just trying to save you from yourself

yeah dude, go with the router, there's no sense in getting another ip address...all it does is open up another computer to attacks.
