    DOS install

i have an old computer that has win95 on it, but i want it only for MS-DOS 6.22 because i think it would be fun to learn DOS. I downloaded MS-DOS 6.22 on a floppy. My question is, how would i go about installing it? I mean, the version of DOS that win95 comes with is not 6.22, so would i have to format my HD using the dos version for win95, then install 6.22 then format again? how do i go about installing DOS 6.22 on a comptuer that has win95?

"Until Windows 95 OSR2 (OEM Release 2), DOS and Windows file allocation table entries were 16 bits in length, limiting hard disk size to 128 megabytes, assuming a 2,048 size cluster"
    www.whatis.com - FAT

does this mean if i have a HD larger than 128M i can only use 128M of it?

does anyone know of a site that explains something about high memory and extended memory, and those things for DOS? I'm sortof lost about this but am curious about it. I've read a number of times about loading a program into highmemory and some other things about extended memory, but i dont' have a clue what ti's talking about? thanks

Do a search on google. I'm sure you'll come up with a ton.

Hunt down a copy of MS DOS 6.22. Make sure to get the version of the file images/disk set that has the extra files on it. Puit it on a set of floppy disks. Format your computer without a quick format - do a full format. Put the first DOS 6.22 floppy disk into your A: drive and make sure your BIOS is botting from the floppy at some point in the drive boot pecking order while making sure no other system startup files are found on the other drives(such as your hard drive or CDROM). MS DOS will default to installing with the first disk inserted. After installing DOS and loading the optional sound card, CDROM, and mouse drivers, run MEMMAKER.

After your system is setup get a new blank floppy disk, put it in the drive, and enter the command sys c: a: and after you do that copy your config.sys, autoexec.bat, mouse driver, cdrom driver, and sound card drivers to this disk(if they'll all fit). Put edit, sys.com, format.com himem.sys, and mscdex.exe onto the disk.

In the event of needing the disk, restart your computer with it in the a: drive. Once at a prompt, type sys a: c:. Now your computer will boot the bare DOS "interface" without a disk inserted. Transfer all of the files you put onto the disk previously back onto the hard drive in their original locations. Your computer now boots, everything loads, and memory is optimized simply waiting for an OS.

Your system is installed, memory configured, and your system has a rescue disk which will get everything going again.
The world is waiting. I must leave you now.

Dos 6.22 can support up to 2 gb partitions. If your drive is larger, then create multiple partitions.
I haven't used a compiler in ages, so please be gentle as I try to reacclimate myself. :P
