Is there any way to share a connection with a Red Hat machine and Windows XP? I just need to share my cable modem. Can I purchase a router or something?

You can purchase a router or have an old spare pc act as one.

    >>> It was disallowing network traffic for no reason.

Argh! Sorry SC - I forgot. When I set up my network in February I had to wiggle ZoneAlarm to get the LAN to work! Forgot that.

    >>If OP had it disabled, he would've had waaay more serious problems by now.

sure, i've never used antivirus for more than 2 weeks and i've never had a virus. Never. So what you're saying is just speculation, and in every computer I've fixed so far that had problems with their internet just not working one day, it was because of programs like norton or mcaffee.

Echo that. I've had my own personal computers for 5+ years and I've never used any kind of antivirus and I've never been infected.

And hell, with the way things are going, I never will. My ISP has virus checkers and most webmail now has virus checkers.

Oh, and did I mention I don't use a firewall either?!

I use windows firewall for the hell of it, and I use spybot's hosts file just because I loathe adware, but other than that 99.9% of antivirus is good decision making...and 99.9% of the people out there don't have that capacity and that's why norton/mcaffee/whatever sells.
