I have Mdk 9.2 and my WinXP boots up faster. I do have a lot of stuff I don't really use starting, maybe when I manage to strip down the kernel and services it'll be faster.Originally posted by ZakkWylde969

It might be that I boot to command line, so that would speed up things with no huge graphics to load.

Well, I was talking about the time till KDE starts to load, although it probably has something to do with it as well.
However, I've just realised that my WinXP HD is 7.5k rpm and my Linux HD is 5.2k rpm, so that'll probably be the deciding factor in that.

I'm running xp pro and mandrake 9.1 on identical drives, xp does smoke mandrake, but when i recompile the kernel with the newest version I'm going to optimize it.

I don't like Linux because there are 100 different distributions and I dont know which one to get (I've tried a few though). Why don't they just make *one* unified version of Linux for normal consumers. That way people will say, "I have Linux" instead of "I have SuSE Linux v.394.3 subbuild C8." People say "I have XP" and thats enough.
The one I had for a while required me to choose like 5 options before it went to the desktop. That ........ed me off and I ditched Linux. Along that I couldn't play any cool games and that getting programs for it was kinda hard.
Also, all Linux programs have wierd names. None of them sound professional. Gentoo... lol

The reason I want to try Linux is I have heard that Linux is very useful in jobs for ISP. That mean if I want to get job relating computer networks, I must know Linux. Is this true? BTW I use, like SuSe9 personal version, can fulfil my purpose?

MS has lots of money because they have good products that people want to buy and because their marketing strategy is very good.
If Linux had any kind of Office equivelent, decent game support, just a few standard distributions (I think there are though), and a unifed marketing strategy, it might work.
Average people dont like to go through 20 different steps to install programs. They just want to double click the thing and let it install itself.
Well for the Office, many distibutions that I have tried offer the program in the install called OpenOffice. It supports Microsoft Word documents, along with that Exel stuff. There are tons of games for Linux, and if you want a major one you could use an emulator. (Don't really know what it's called, but it's something where you can play Windows games on Linux). Linux doesn't have a real marketing scheme, because HEY! it's free! Why should someone put money into something that they don't sell.

now don't take this as me flaming you, but please stop talking about linux like you know whats going on. There's something called an rpm, most newer programs come packaged as one, and any of the modern window managers for linux let you just double click them to install...if you had used linux you would have known this, so just stop arguing about something you don't know anything about. That's what I was getting at with my first post to you, don't take it as me just bashing windows for the hell of it, im using it right now.

Don't most files in Linux self install too now a day? natilus allows you to double click compressed files and they just extract and install. Linux is what people make it out to be (a computer whiz non GUI operating system). It has as much (even better IMO) of a graphical interface than Windows. The new Gnome 2.4 I think is awsome. I think it offers just a tab bit more than windows.
