    Search engines not working sometimes!

I have Windows 2000 with IE 6. When I try to do a search when logged on under my administrator account it works correctly. When I try it under any other account including another admin. account it doesn't do anything. The page just sits there like I haven't clicked on the search button.

I have checked all IE's settings I can think of and even tried shutting of my firewall (Zone Alarm) just in case and it still doesn't work.
I've also done some free online scans to check for virus and like, and my comp. comes up clean.

Is there something obvious I am overlooking here? Any ideas on how I could fix this?

Is it just searches, or does this happen with other webpages? What search engine? Any of them?

I had ZoneAlarm running for some time. I turned it off when I got my hardware firewall as it was blocking some LAN traffic - never really thought about it after that. However, a month or two back - I got a mail from them saying some important security holes had bee filled and a new free version was available.

Now, I was fairly sure I would never need them, however, it was free, and you never know - so I downloaded and tried to install it. The install failed, saying Windows 95 was not a supported OS. Okay, so I turned it off again and forgot all about it.

A day later, my Seti@Home screen saver became stuck during it's communication phase, whatever I did, I couldn't get it going again.

At the end of the week, I discovered my anti virus software live update was failing.

    My e-mail would not come.

I tried loads of things, but it was de-installing ZoneAlarm that fixed it - it was not in the startup folder, no indications that it was running - but something was.

Now - I'm not suggesting for a minute that ZoneAlarm is the problem - I'm just saying that turning it off, may not actually turn it right off.

I have had problems caused by Zone Alarm before, that even after shutting it down it would still cause problems. I don't remember the exact circumstances around it but I do know it can still cause difficulties.

I am glad you brought this up I may try it when I get home. I bought a D-link router the other day for 30 bucks and after I get it set up I will probably uninstall Zone Alarm.

And yes when I click on search at google and a couple of other search engines (I don't remember which ones) the page just sits there like I never hit the search button. I can still browse the web as normal at other sites.

Interestingly, the router I bought was a D-Link. DI-804V. After installing that in February, I had NO END of trouble surfing. Turns out the firmware in the router was incompatible with the ADSL kit in Denmark. What threw me was if you checked D-Link's site - I seemed to have the most up to date firmware, when in fact, there was a special revision for Scandinavian customers, they just didn't mention it. Was not until I phoned D-Link to give them one last chance before I threw the thing out of the window and buy a LinkSys that they mentioned this.

Seems to work now - flashed the router 2 weeks ago.

Well at least you got the kinks worked out in the end! I certainly hope I have better luck than that though.
