    Memory speed

How much of a difference would different types of memory bring to overall performance of my comp?

    Like lets say DDR266, 333, 400?

Well you'll only see a difference if you're FSB is the same speed (or faster) than the ddr ram. If you have a 266 FSB and have 333 ram, there's no improvement there over the 266. It's really all subjective, you can't just ask for cold hard facts, there are too many factors. All I can say for sure is that the higher the number, the faster it accesses the memory...better gameplay and quicker compile times i guess.

So FSB is a speed bump to the memory right? So if I run P4 with 400FSB my memmory can only be at 400Mhz top speed without overclocking? And if I get a 800Mhz P4 I can push my memory to 800mhz, right?

    Correct,
but, just to clarify, the FSB is like a bucket, and the processor is your pool. Water (data) is in the bucket, the faster the FSB, the quicker you get water(data) into the pool (processor).

That's a pretty sweet analogy Waldo. I never heard it explained like that... I'll have to remember that one.

incorrect, the pentium IV does not run at 400 mhrz FSB, that is the Quadpumped rate it uses for memory bandwidth, in actuallity, a 400 mhrz FSB P4 is running at 100 mhrz FSB. therefore, the memory speed at a 1:1 ratio is ddr 200 memory. the p4 533mhrz fsb upped this to 133mhrz or ddr266 at 1:1 ratio(there are other ratios, most common are 3:4 or 4:5 in the BIOS settings). the 800 mhrz fsb P4's run at 200 mhrz FSB or DDR 400.

The actual speed benifits you will find(if you have the right FSB, one can overclock this if they want to) are not really different between DDR200 and DDR266, but start to make a different at the DDR333 and DDR400 range, and the DDR500 ram is just gravy on top of it.

I recommend you go to www.oc-forums.com and check it out, they can lead you the right direction when it comes to hardware.

doesn't really matter, all i was trying to get across was that you can't have memory faster than your FSB, or rather, it's not worth it.

Makes sence, 'cause I have never seen a board with memory faster than CPU.

well i was just trying to clarify for him, i dont want him wasting money on DDR400 ram because he thinks the speed of the CPU is 400 mhrz fsb.
