Help needed for computer with DOS

I have a computer, and I can only use DOS on it. Nothing else. I have attached an external HDD to it, and I want to copy everything from the computer onto the HDD. I tried typing "copy c:\* d:\*" and "copy c:\ d:\" but they just copy the files and not the directories. What DOS command copies everything, including the directory structure.

    xcopy

xcopy with /s will copy directories and sub-dirs as long as they're not empty.
/e will allow you to copy empty directories and subs

try typing 'help' and see what comes up... if it's too much, try typing 'help /p' or 'help | more'

If I remember....XCOPY does come with Win98, but you need a search to find it......if not it may be on your Win98 disk

    "help" produced an error message.

And it's actually a WinXP disc, which for some reason has a really old version of DOS on it. I'll search anyway, but I doubt I'll find it.

I looked at bootdisk.com, but getting the stuff I need on a CD, and then having my computer boot that CD is proving to be a challenge.
